The overhanging hoods of the Karman cannula may be used to retrieve an intrauterine device (IUD) when the threads are no longer visible. Conventional methods used for this purpose operate similarly but may fail where the device has no convolutions that can be hooked or grasped. The suction applied via the Karman syringe helps engangle the threads with the cannula hoods, thereby helping extract the device. Prior radiologic diagnostic procedures are unnecessary and are thus reduced to a minimum. The Karman suction cannula was evaluated and found to be a safe, effective and acceptable means of locating and removing an IUD when the thread is retracted.
