Thirty‐five patients with stage IA or IB carcinoma of the endometrium were treated with total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo‐oophorectomy. Eighteen of these received 6‐methyl‐17α‐hydroxyprogesterone within 24 hours after surgery and then at weekly intervals for 14 weeks. Seventeen patients received a placebo on a similar schedule. At five years, there were two deaths due to cancer in the hydroxyprogesterone‐treated group and one in the placebo‐treated group. The use of the hormone did not improve survival or influence the rate of recurrence during the five‐year observation period now concluded for all 35 patients.
