Basal body temperature charts taken during the cycle of conception of pregnancies that have resulted in spontaneous first trimester abortion, suggested the presence of ovulation defect and inadequate function of the early corpus luteum. Particularly prevalent were “stepwise midcycle temperature rise” patterns, suggesting cause and effect correlation between disturbances of the endocrine phenomena that control ovulation and ensuing chromosome abnormalities of the products of conception. The latter phenomenon was found relatively frequently among infertility clinic patients; a group known to be predisposed towards various abnormalities of pregnancy. The authors consider this BBT pattern as probably conducive to early abortion and fetal developmental and chromosome anomalies.
