Alterations in serum naphthylamidase isoenzymes were studied in a series of 95 women treated with oral contraceptives. Women taking progestin pills showed no reaction, while the majority of women using combined oral contraceptives showed an extra serum naphthylamidase zone after one month. The frequency of women showing “the naphthylamidase reaction” increased with the estrogen dose. The results indicate that the naphthylamidase reaction may be developed into a sensitive test for early disturbances in liver metabolism during treatment with oral contraceptives.
