Suonio, S., Jalkanen, M., Olkkonen, H. & Castrén, O. (Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University Central Hospital, Kuopio, Finland). Effect of isoxu‐prine on uteroplacental blood flow in normal and hypertensive patients during the last trimester of pregnancy . Int J Gynaecol Obstet 13 : 225–228, 1975. The uteroplacental blood flow was evaluated in 15 normal and 12 hypertensive patients in late pregnancy using the 99m Tc accumulation method before and after a single i.m. dose of 5 mg of isoxuprine. In the group of normal patients there was a statistically significant 35 per cent mean increase in the accumulation rate, but in the group of hypertensive patients no significant change was found. Other haemodynamic variables measured were the maternal heart rate and systolic and diastolic blood pressures. There was a statistically significant increase in the heart rate in both patient groups after medication. No significant changes were observed in systolic pressure. In diastolic pressure a significant fall was found in normal, but not in hypertensive patients. According to the results, the therapeutically positive maternal vascular response to isoxuprine does not take place in pregnancy complicated by hypertensive disease.
