Neuberg, R. (Maternity Dept., Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, Berkshire, England). The “uninducible” cervix: Induction of labour using extra‐amniotic prostaglandin E 2 . Int J Gynaecol Obstet 13 : 171–173, 1975. It is desirable that the obstetrician be able to induce labour successfully regardless of the apparent non‐inducibility of the patient due to an unfavourable cervix. The alternative methods in most units are either repeated prolonged syntocinon infusions or elective Caesarean section. A method is described for administering Prostaglandin E 2 by intermittent extra‐amniotic injection through a Foley catheter. Labour was induced successfully in 100% of 50 patients having very low Bishop scores. The 50 patients were between 28 and 42 weeks of gestation. The mean induction‐delivery interval was 13.7 hours. There were no significant side effects. The Apgar scores were very satisfactory. The technique is simple and requires no special equipment.
