Berger, G. S. (Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology, North Carolina Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA). Legal abortion: an appraisal of its health impact. Int J Gynaecol Obstet 13 : 165–170, 1975. Widespread availability of legal abortion is associated with declining abortion‐related maternal mortality and morbidity. It is also associated with declining fertility rates, at least in the short‐term. The potential impact of legal abortion on subsequent reproductive outcome remains to be assessed more completely, but there is little evidence at the present time of a detrimental effect.
