The proper management of immunosuppression in transplantation requires a working knowledge of immunology and pharmacology. In practice we employ two to four agents in one of several complicated protocols. If we consider the variability of individual patients, the potential for drug interactions, and significant compliance problems inherent in any long‐term multidrug regimen, the dimensions of the challenge of immunosuppression to the practicing clinician become apparent.
