Two sources of evidence regarding rape trends in New South Wales are presented, one showing a steep increase, the other showing none. Since both sources accurately represent official figures, this raises questions about the reliability of the statistics as well as the interpretations flowing from them. The claim that there has been no change, and hence no need for public concern, is disputed in the light of the alternative data, which appear more satisfactory.
