Although Watkins' paper aims to question the stereotype of the servility of Filipino women, the material presented tends to support the stereotype. The argument suffers from the inadequacy of previous studies of the ‘status’ of Filipino women and the lack of information on the motivation and situation of Filipino ‘mail order brides’ in Australia. The paper also indicates profound cultural differences between Filipinos and Australians which could create problems in such marriages.
