The phenomenon of the increasing number of Filipino girls marrying Australian men is described. The literature and some new data on the status and role of women in Filipino society and Filipino values and personality are then reviewed. It is concluded that Filipino brides are likely to be well educated, timid, modest, and family oriented. However, they may well have had little domestic experience and are unlikely to take kindly to being treated as ‘meek, obedient slaves’. In fact they are capable of making life very uncomfortable for husbands who do not treat them with respect. Some suggestions for future research are also outlined.
