Gambling has always been part of the Australian heritage. However, the relatively recent introduction of Poker Machines to New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory has met with unprecedented success if viewed in terms of their money earning capacity for both their owners and the Government. This article examines the psychological principles involved in the operation of Poker Machines and why people continue to play them, and even become addicted to them, in the face of knowledge that they will almost certainly lose money over any extended playing period.
