A symbolic interactionist perspective is used to examine the effects of institutionalization on residents of a Sydney nursing home. The analysis suggests that much of the ‘negative’ behaviour observed among inmates results from the institutional structuring of a dependence role. Implications for long term care of the aged in both community and institutional settings are discussed.
