While there is considerable general interest in Australia in the ‘applied’ aspects of death such as bereavement, grief and mourning, there is almost no psychological or sociological interest and very little data. This paper reports some descriptive data derived from a survey using a questionnaire adapted from an American study. The aim of the paper is to provide a basis and a stimulus for an Australian interest in the psychology and sociology of death. Data are presented and summarized, and compared with the American results.
