The demand for serious evaluation of schools, educational programmes, curricula, and personnel is growing in this country. And, if the American experience is any guide, we can expect the demand for educational evaluation generally to increase in Australia as federal expenditure on education continues. The ultimate worth of any evaluation project depends on a variety of factors, and four basic questions about evaluation are proposed and discussed in some detail. It is suggested that, from the answers given to these questions, the credibility and likely overall worth of any given evaluation can largely be determined.
