Selection is a vital part of any immigration programme. However, it must be carried out in the context of the prospective migrant's motivation and attitudes to authority, and the reality situation of a particular country. The procedures adopted by the Australian Department of Immigration in Greece and Yugoslavia are discussed from the perspective of counselling, the provision of information, selection and preventive services. Difficulties faced by the selection officers are examined, but in the author's view considerable improvement is both possible and necessary.
