An action research project designed to contribute to improved school performance and gain insights into educationally relevant dimensions of the behaviour of high school Aboriginal students was implemented in a country community. Attitudes to school and employment were assessed; achievement motivation, compared with white slow learners, was measured; and both coaching in academic work and vocational reality testing were provided for students. The presence of a surprising degree of achievement motivation is discussed as a variable of considerable importance which has been neglected in Aboriginal education.
