This paper presents new data for island use in the north west of Australia. The data from High Cliffy Shelter indicate that there are significant similarities in the prehistoric use of islands between northeast and northwest Australia. These findings have implications for previous theories regarding the impetus for initial offshore island use in north east Australia. Furthermore, it is argued that the pattern of offshore island use in northern Australia can be differentiated from island use in southern Australia. Reasons for this variability are examined
