CLIMATIC and archaeological data are used to test previous concepts of the nature of the introduction of kumara (sweet potato) into prehistoric New Zealand. While the evidence does not clearly point to any new hypothesis, previous accounts are inadequate in several respects. The importance of climatic change appears to have been over‐emphasized and in addition the date of introduction placed too late.
