The evolution of cultural sensitivity in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd edition ( DSM—III ); 3rd edition, Revised ( DSM—III—R ); and 4th edition (DSM—IV) is described. Five improvements in the DSM—IV are discussed: (a) descriptions of specific cultural features, (b) glossary of culture‐bound syndromes, (c) outline of cultural formulation, (d) broader definition of Axis IV, and (e) new “V codes.”
