The origins and growth of American counseling psychology were closely tied to early developments at the University of Minnesota. Pioneering work in student personnel research was initiated by Donald Paterson and his associates in the 1920s and 1930s. E. G. Williamson, John Darley, and Gilbert Wrenn were Minnesota psychologists who played central roles in the establishment of the APA Division of Counseling Psychology and the creation of the ABPP diploma in counseling and guidance. Minnesota is the only institution offering two broadly based APA‐accredited programs in counseling psychology: one program in the Department of Psychology and the other program in the College of Education.
