The authors examine research involving both physiological and psychological factors that may be strongly related to the development and maintenance of obesity. This examination reveals that attempts to treat obesity often exacerbate the condition. It is suggested that integration of guidelines developed from research presented may make treatment more effective. A somewhat unique proposal made is that highly desired foods must be included in treatment in a controlled‐access manner to minimize the loss of freedom perceived by the individual.
