An analysis of the drug-induced deaths reported to the Swedish Adverse Drug Reaction Committee during its first 5 years of existence from 1966-1970 is presented. Various classifications are given to reports of adverse drug reactions but only the first 2 classifications causal relationships probable or not excluded were included in the analysis. There were 139 such cases. In 21% of the cases antibiotics and sulfonamides were involved. Other drug classes that caused most deaths were oral contraceptives (11%) and psychotropic drugs (9%). The dominating types of reaction were hematologic (48%) thromboembolic (13%) and anaphylactic (9%). Continuous supervision of the adverse drug reaction pattern and regular analyses of various aspects of the pattern are necessary.
