In his column, AWWA Executive Director David LaFrance discusses the water industry's concerns with ongoing hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracking or fracking) operations by the gas industry that it may create cracks that allow natural gas to contaminate well water, and disposal of flowback and produced water from fracking may lead to contamination of surface water. LaFrance provides examples of research from several different sources that indicates fracking is a risk to groundwater, and he states that the danger of continuing with fracking operations while the public waits for additional noncontroversial and conclusive science is simply that once source water is contaminated, it is too late.
