In his column, AWWA Executive Director David LaFrance discusses the state of the nation's drinking water distribution system and how, because of its age, it is in desperate need of replacement. Despite the need for replacement, distribution systems are still required to deliver safe drinking water, and therefore, optimizing distribution systems operations is critical. The Partnership for Safe Water (PSW) launched a new program this year to help utilities optimize operations and enhance water quality in their distribution systems. Data from a utility's self‐assessment review is used to develop an optimization action plan specifically customized for that utility. The article provides contact information for the program.
