This memorial column announces the death of Charles O'Melia, respected professor and renowned researcher in filtration and coagulation, on December 16, 2010, at age 76. He was a professor emeritus in the department of geography and environmental engineering at The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. He received one of AWWA's highest awards, the A.P. Black Award, in 1990 for his outstanding research contributions to water science, particularly filtration and coagulation. O'Melia also earned the AWWA Publications Award twice and the Research Division Best Paper Award during his career. in 1999, he was named the university's Abel Wolman Professor of Environmental Engineering. O'Melia was a life member of AWWA and served as a trustee and chair of the Research Division and a member of the Technical and Professional Council (now the Technical and Education Council). He contributed numerous articles to the JOURNAL.
