This article highlights AWWA's International Council (IC), officially created in 2002 to develop and coordinate AWWA's international policies and activities, actively promote Association participation in the global drinking water community, represent the interests of the international members in the governance of AWWA, and stimulate participation of international members and organizations within the Association. The article discusses the IC's vision of future directions for AWWA's new global activities. Part of that vision involves partnerships through memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with water associations based on a regional or specific‐country focus. The article provides a list of organizations that have MOUs with AWWA, along with examples of past and current activities from work plans with those organizations. The article also discusses the role that IC's predecessor played in promoting a recommendation to establish Water For People.
