This article discusses the landmark Article 708, Critical Operations Power Systems, that is part of the 2008 National Electrical Code (NEC). It addresses new or significantly upgraded electrical systems for all critical infrastructure ‐ including water and wastewater facilities. The article discusses two key definitions of terminology found in Article 708: Critical Operations Power System (COPS); and, Designated Critical Operations Area (DCOA). It goes on to discuss specific requirements the facility must meet after being classified as a DCOA.
