Source water once again ranked among the top five issues of concern identified by utilities in the 2009 State of the Industry Report (to be published in October). Hit by both demand increases and drought, source water concerns are strongest in the majority of states west of the Mississippi as well as in Alaska, British Columbia, western Canada, Hawaii, Mexico, and Michigan. With mounting stresses being placed on source water (e.g., rapidly multiplying demands, drought, climate change), it is becoming increasingly important to protect existing treatable sources.
