The focus of this article is on efforts outside of our nation's capital to support the water community to continue to carry out programs and activities needed to ensure the safety of the nation's drinking water. The article highlights the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA's) 10 regional offices located throughout the country that serve as a critical bridge between headquarters and staff in the states, developing regulations, providing assistance on implementation, and overseeing state programs. They also carry out initiatives that reflect the concerns of their geographic regions. A second support system is found in state drinking water programs, and the article discusses how the USEPA delegates primary enforcement responsibility to states to work directly with public water systems.
