This article discusses reasons why pipes fail, and lists risk factors for pipe breaks. Different types of pipe material are presented. The article stresses the importance of proactively seeking and abating unreported leakage in water distribution systems, and describes the Sahara leak location system designed to locate leaks of all sizes in large‐diameter and nonmetallic mains. Examples are provided of utilities that have used the technology successfully.
