This memorial column pays tribute to Daniel A. Okun, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. An influential and internationally known water engineer who was also a frequent contributor to JOURNAL AWWA, Okun was the Kenan Professor of Environmental Engineering, Emeritus, at the University of North Carolina (UNC) in Chapel Hill. He authored or coauthored numerous JOURNAL articles, often focusing on conserving high‐quality water sources and promoting dual distribution systems as a way to ensure that the best quality water is used as drinking water. Two of Okun's JOURNAL articles were recognized with AWWA's Division Best Paper Awards. Over the years, he also penned more than a dozen opinion pieces or letters to the editor, and he made numerous presentations at AWWA's conferences and symposiums. The article relates highlights of his career, and the many awards he received from AWWA that include: the Friendship Award in 1984; the Abel Wolman Award of Excellence in 1991; the Fuller Award in 1984 from AWWA's North Carolina Section; and, in 1999 Okun received AWWA's Gold Water Drop Award for his longtime support of the association's programs and goals.
