This article discusses a report published by AWWA titled Security Funding Opportunities: Lessons and Observations from Successful Water and Wastewater Utilities. This report studied 10 utilities from across the United States that successfully obtained state or federal funding to implement security upgrades. The key lessons learned from their stories are discussed in this article and include: be persistent; be prepared; make end‐of‐fiscal‐ year requests; network and educate; tailor applications; think outside the box; and, use grant writers.
