In his column, AWWA Executive Director Jack Hoffbuhr discusses the new government ideology bandwagon of “geological sequestration,” and compares its new popularity with the gasoline additive MTBE that was the government's panacea, not too long ago, to reduce emissions of air pollutants from automobiles. He questions the reasoning behind the geological sequestration technique, and presents the potential effects on the environment of this injection and long‐term storage practice. The two main points he questions are the scale of this technique that would be necessary to effectively reduce the CO 2 annually emitted from power plants, and the possible leakage of CO 2 into other geologic formations, potentially contaminating underground drinking water sources.
