The recently renovated Besos Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in northeastern Barcelona, Spain, treats more than 70% of the wastewater for the city of Barcelona and surrounding towns. Building the new 900,000‐sq ft facility underground was seen as a solution to problems with limited space and odors from concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia in the wastewater. Purafil products were used to provide odor control for the Besos WWTP. The article describes the Purafil dry‐chemical media and scrubber technology that permanently eliminates the odorous gases through chemisorption.
