This article provides basic information on how to become certified with the city of Phoenix, Arizona, as a minority‐owned business enterprise (MBE), a woman‐owned business enterprise (WBE), a disadvantaged business enterprise (DBE), and/or a small business enterprise (SBE). The article explores how doing so might help such business owners find new markets and opportunities in both the public and private sectors. This article is a follow‐up to the Journal's May 2007 Workforce Diversity column that describes how the authors, Kristin Darr‐Bornstein and Marsha Miller, pursued certification as a woman‐owned business with the City of Phoenix. This article provides a brief history of race‐ and gender‐based programs, the three basic requirements of certification, and the examination of the ownership, control, and independence of the firm.
