This article establishes the groundwork for development of an AWWA standard on magmeters. Because there is currently no AWWA standard that provides guidelines for magmeter selection, the variety of available materials and end connections may leave the user uncertain about which equipment design to select. Incorrect equipment selection and vague installation guidelines, as with other types of flowmeters, may lead to undesirable results. This article provides basic information about the acceptable level of performance for industry applications and installation requirements for magmeters. A future standard should include all topics discussed in this article as well as additional information that will supplement a user's knowledge of the technology.
