This article begins by profiling the City of San Diego Water Department, and focuses on energy optimization programs that the water department has implemented such as a bid‐to‐goal and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 programs. The two main goals of these programs are to reduce treated water purchases and decrease energy consumption. Since energy was a major expense for the water department, the staff initiated changes that resulted in a more cost‐effective service.
