This article notes the passing of A.T. (Tom) Palin of Newcastle, United Kingdom. An honorary member of AWWA, Palin is best known as a pioneer of the DPD (diethyl‐p‐phenylene diamine) method for measuring chlorine in water. Palin's classic work on chlorination chemistry and his development of new test procedures provided the key to explaining breakpoint chlorination and laid the foundation for the present classification of modern processes. The article relates highpoints of his career in the water industry.
