Because of its unique nature, responsibility for preparedness and response to a pandemic extends across all levels of government and all levels of society. To help water utilities prepare for the worst, AWWA recently gathered together a select group of public health and utility professionals to participate in a pandemic roundtable discussion. Organized by Opflow Managing Editor John Hughes and moderated by AWWA Executive Director Jack Hoffbuhr, the roundtable included Dr. Michael T. Osterholm, director, Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy, University of Minnesota; Jane Downing, chief, Drinking Water Branch, US Environmental Protection Agency, New England Region; Fred Laskey, executive director, Massachusetts Water Resources Authority; Dr. Gerald Iwan, chief, Drinking Water Section, Connecticut Department of Public Health; Marcia St. Martin, executive director, New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board; Brian Good, director of operations and maintenance, Denver Water; Kevin Gertig, water production manager, Fort Collins Utilities; and Buck Henderson, manager, Public Drinking Water Section, Water Supply Division, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
