This article discusses the effort made by the city of Joliet, Illinois, to handle unprecedented growth by upgrading its meter‐reading system to the Sensus FixNet system, a wireless automatic meter reading system that uses a radio‐based, wide‐area fixed network with a single‐tier network design to securely and accurately transfer end user water use data to a data‐collection center. The four major components of the system are discussed.
