This article announces that the California Department of Health Services has granted Carollo Engineers P.C. conditional acceptance for a fixed‐bed biological treatment process for the production of drinking water from source water contaminated with perchlorate. The article notes that this is the first approval of its kind for a nonproprietary perchlorate treatment technology that now makes it possible to use perchlorate treatment in the state of California. The article lists the elements of Carollo's fixed‐bed biological process, and states that the process was selected for testing because it effectively removes perchlorate from groundwater without creating a waste stream that requires further treatment or disposal.
