This article describes a multiyear partnership between Sandia National Laboratories, CH2M HILL, and Tenix Investments Pty. Ltd. to develop an unattended water safety system that offers the capability of detecting currently unmonitored biological agents such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Initial commercial units and wider deployment are expected beginning in late 2005 and continuing into 2007. Tenix, which has operations in Mississippi, Virginia, and California, will work with CH2M HILL primarily as systems integrator. The technology is expected to be provided by specialized US‐based technology firms producing Sandia‐designed equipment for the system.
