In his column, AWWA Executive Director Jack Hoffbuhr discusses the December 26, 2004 tsunami that impacted the countries of Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, and elsewhere and what effect the tsunami will have on water and sanitation systems in those areas. He states that even though the magnitude of this disaster is tremendous, the immediate loss of life due to the tsunami will be outstripped by the number of people dying from unsafe drinking water under ordinary circumstances in other parts of the world. He hopes that the spotlight on the tsunami disaster will encourage greater public and governmental awareness of safe water and sanitation concerns not only in Asia, but also in developing countries throughout the world.
