In his column, AWWA Executive Director Jack Hoffbuhr discusses what utilities will have to do to be effective in a rapidly changing environment that includes aging infrastructure, growing consumer demands, a changing workforce, crazy climatic conditions, and in many cases, insufficient water resources. Hoffbuhr states that the key is to transition from management to leadership, and that strategic thinking to identify alternate futures based on different scenarios is more effective than an over‐structured planning system. He also discusses expanding measures of success from merely being financially solvent and having a sound physical infrastructure to gauging how customer needs are met, fulfilling social responsibility to public health and the environment, and assisting employees with learning and growth.
