This article discusses disinfection, from chlorine first being used in England and the United States in the late 1890s; the use of calcium hypochlorite, sodium hypochlorite, chloramination; waterborne disease outbreaks and tighter regulations on disinfection byproducts leading to the use of chlorine dioxide, ozone, and ultraviolet light as primary disinfection technologies; and, changes in disinfection practices will be driven by water demand, pathogens, disinfection byproducts, and new technology.
