In his column, AWWA Executive Director Jack Hoffbuhr discusses the January 2004 Washington, D.C. water quality problem concerning unsafe levels of lead, using it as an example of the need for effective communication and coordination among any and all agencies having responsibility for drinking water and public health in a community or region. Also, Hoffbuhr stresses the importance of a continual community outreach program rather than involving the public only during a crisis.
