The goal of the AWWA Organisms in Water Committee (OIW) is to reduce the numbers of microorganisms in drinking water to a level that prevents disease in the case of pathogens and to ensure aesthetically pleasing water in the case of nuisance organisms. An additional treatment goal is stabilization of the water so that the regrowth of microorganisms, which can contribute to compliance violations and taste and odor problems, is controlled. The article discusses the variety of media it uses to achieve its mission and lists the committee members with their affiliation and email address.
