The goal of the AWWA Control of Water Quality in Transmission and Distribution Systems (WQDS) Committee is to provide the water industry with the knowledge and support necessary to achieve and maintain optimal water quality in transmission and distribution systems. The methods used by the WQDS Committee to achieve this goal are discussed. The committee also provided support to the new DSS: The Distribution & Plant Operations Conference, by developing a session that provided distribution system operators and managers information on free chlorine and chloramine disinfection, chloramine decay, concerns associated with mixing free chlorine and chloramines, and how to maintain a disinfectant residual in distribution system reservoirs. The article lists issues and topics that the WQDS committee plans to cover at upcoming conferences, and describes how the committee keeps a strong focus on regulatory affairs.
