Beginning in 2005, small water systems will be required to produce a combined filtered water turbidity that is less than or equal to 0.30 NTU, according to the Long‐Term 1 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule. This article discusses a valuable new training approach called performance‐based training (PBT), which will help meet the challenge of this new standard. PBT objectives include: establishing performance goals and developing performance data; developing priority setting and problem‐solving skills (special studies); developing coagulation control tools; assessing performance, and applying new skills and tools; and, reporting on success.
